Zotero MCP is a Model Context Protocol server that lets AI clients search, read, annotate, and add items to your Zotero research library, working with either the local Zotero app or the web API. It includes semantic search over extracted PDF text, full metadata/annotation/note access, write operations, optional Scite citation tools, and a standalone CLI with an agent skill.
It lets you query and manage your reference library conversationally instead of switching to the Zotero app, including finding items by meaning rather than keywords.
Use it to
- Semantic search across your library's PDFs
- Retrieve and synthesize PDF annotations and notes
- Add items by DOI, URL, ISBN, BibTeX, or CSL JSON
- Find and merge duplicate entries
- Check retractions and citation context via Scite
